BRANEY, John Miles - Obituary - Sudbury

1946 – 2026

We’re sad to share that John Braney has passed away. He made an impact on a lot of people, and his strong spirit won’t be forgotten by those who knew him.

John is survived by his wife and partner Danielle Braney (his Dani), his daughter Joanne Evenden (Scott), his son Colin Braney (Christina), their mother Carolyn Kirkland (Rick), his stepdaughter Mélanie de Bagheera (David Stephen) and stepson Ivan de Bagheera (Tara Alexander). His grandchildren Brooke Cox (David), Hailey Froese (Jordan), Jillian Barbeau (Matt), Cole Braney (Emmy), Abbey de Bagheera and Myles de Bagheera will miss him too, as will great-grandchildren Emett, Tyson, Luca and Allison.

He was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Madeline Braney, as well as his sister Marie Templar and her husband Andy. Also remembering him fondly are his brother and close friend Victor Braney (Georgia), nephew Chris Braney (Silvia), niece Cara Coulson (Ron Allen) along with their children Madeline and Erin Braney, plus Victoria and Laura Southwood.

John spent many years working for the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General. He started out as an OPP officer with postings in Temagami, Grassy Narrows, Burks Falls from 1968 to 1983. Later he worked for the Office of the Fire Marshal in places like Timmins, St. Catharines, Sudbury, Toronto, Kingston before returning to Sudbury where he finished up in 2000. Back in 1979-80 he was also Past Master of the Nipissing-Muskoka District Masonic Corona Lodge No.454 in Burks Falls.

After retiring he didn’t slow down-John volunteered managing the Alertech project which included building a fire tower and grounds at the Lionel Lalonde Centre. He even served overseas in Afghanistan with SNC Lavalin embedded alongside Canadian Armed Forces in Kandahar as a Health and Safety Officer and CSM. For his leadership making “One Mission-One Team” real, he was given the Commander’s Coin.

Though health problems came over time, John still found ways to pitch in for others. At Maison Mc Culloch Hospice he helped out volunteering in the kitchen while lifting everyone’s mood around him.

A lot of friends will keep telling stories about him whether it’s out on the golf course or just chatting over coffee shops. People will always remember how firmly he held onto his beliefs-he defended them passionately whenever he got a chance.

We want to thank all medical staff at HSN and ARCC plus everyone who looked after him during these last few weeks. There’ll be a celebration of life on Sunday May 17 from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Idylwylde Golf and Country Club located at 400 Walford Rd., Sudbury. Instead of flowers please consider donating to Maison Mc Culloch Hospice or any charity you choose.

The arrangements are being handled by Ranger’s Cremation and Burial Services Ltd. You can leave your condolences online at www. Rangers Sudbury. com.
