WEST, George Thomas - Obituary - Sault Ste. Marie

September 25, 1952 – April 17, 2026

It’s with heavy hearts that we share the news of George’s peaceful passing in Thessalon on April 17, 2026. He was 73 and surrounded by family and close friends. George leaves behind his loving wife and lifelong companion Colleen, daughter Kristin (Jordan Cumming), and son Ryan. He was a proud grandpa to Iris and Foster. George was the son of the late George (Marjorie) and Joyce West. He also leaves behind siblings Debbie (Fraser), Michael (late Janice), and Mark (Heather). Son-in-law to the late Gilbert and Ruby Conway. Brother-in-law to the late Jim, late Randy, and Calvin (Carole). He had many nieces and nephews who’ll miss him dearly.

Back in his school days, George was involved with army cadets as well as hockey and curling teams. He spent three summers at Ipperwash army camp where he earned recognition as best cadet in his battalion during his final year there. Later on, he became a training officer for the Kapuskasing District High School cadet corps. Between 1972 and 1977, he served as a Second Lieutenant with the 49th Field Regiment, RCA.

George built a long career in financial services across several Northern Ontario towns. While at CIBC, he won two branch manager awards. Eventually, he joined Freedom 55 Financial until retiring in 2017.

He loved being outdoors-spending countless hours hunting or fishing-and really valued those moments shared with family and friends.

George passed away just two months before what would have been his 50th wedding anniversary with Colleen; they celebrated early together surrounded by their loved ones.

Despite dealing with health challenges over time, George kept an upbeat attitude throughout everything life threw at him. A good friend to so many people who could always count on him for support or a smile that lifted spirits around him.

A big thank you goes out to all our wonderful neighbors and friends who’ve helped us through these years-and especially these last few months.

We’re truly grateful for all the care given by staff at SAH & NSHN in Thessalon & Blind River along with Northern Respiratory services plus Ontario Health at Home. If you’d like to make a donation instead of flowers or gifts please consider any of these groups-they meant so much to us.

Following George’s wishes cremation has already taken place. The family will hold a private burial soon followed by a Celebration of Life which will be announced later on.

The arrangements were handled by Beggs Funeral Home in Thessalon. Feel free to leave memories or condolences online at www. beggsfh. com.
