Firearm advocates plan rally in Cambridge amid gun buy-back

If you ask ten people what they think about the federal government’s Assault Style Firearm Compensation Program (ASFCP), chances are you’ll get ten different answers.

But folks with the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR) are pretty clear on where they stand. They’ve actually organized a rally for late April to push back against the ASFCP and to criticize the Waterloo Region Police for their role in supporting the program.

Tracey Wilson, Vice President of Media Relations at CCFR, told 570 News Radio that her group is completely opposed to it.

“We opposed the gun grab in its entirety from beginning to end. The focus of gun control should be to prevent the misuse of firearms, not the legitimate use of firearms. So anybody that is helping the liberal government attack law-abiding citizens in this way is a focus of our efforts.”

This week, WRPS Chief Mark Crowell appeared on The Mike Farwell Show and mentioned that joining this program brings extra resources that help increase staff needed to run it.

Wilson questions whether those resources might be better spent fighting crime instead.

“If there’s extra resources to be allocated to collecting firearms from people who have committed no crimes, why aren’t those allocated to preventing shootings?”

She also has concerns about how much this ASFCP will cost. Wilson feels that money could be put to better use somewhere else.

“The billion dollars he’s (Prime Minister Mark Carney) wasting on the buyback itself, could be rerouted to putting x-ray scanners at every border crossing along our gigantic border with the United States, and that would go a long way to preventing smuggling.”

The CCFR intends to keep pushing their case all the way up through the courts.

“All Canadians should be keeping an eye on this case as it makes its way through the Supreme Court,” said Wilson. “There’s a very big question that will be answered, and that’s: Can the government step into your life, although you’ve done nothing wrong and nothing to deserve it and confiscate your property against your will? I think we need the answers to that.”

The CCFR is urging people into action. They’re pointing out anyone who has registered a weapon can undo that declaration. Information about how to do this is available on their website.

The Waterloo Region Rally Against the Gun Grab will take place Friday, April 24, at Cambridge City Hall from 4 p. m. until 7 p. m.

Three local conservative MPs have agreed to show up at the rally: Kelly De Ridder, Matt Strauss and Connie Cody.
