With heavy hearts but also gratitude for a long and full life, the family of Mrs. Joan Walker shares that she passed away at 101 years old on Friday, March 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born in Toronto on October 7, 1924 and moved to Thunder Bay in 1949.
Joan’s world revolved around home, family, and faith. She played an active role in every part of her family’s lives. Many knew and respected her simply as “Grandma Walker.” Over time, she loved encouraging her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to live fully. As she often said, “only the good die young.” For more than four decades, she spent weekends and summers at her favorite spot by the lake – Amethyst Harbour – where she made lifelong friends and gathered many fond memories.
For over 75 years Joan was a member of St. Thomas Anglican Church. She took part actively in the Altar Guild as both President and Secretary and was deeply involved with the ACW as well. Being part of the Lake Superior chapter IODE meant volunteering at their Thrift store and organizing their big annual book sale for countless hours. She also served as President of the chapter. Besides this, Joan gave her time to Meals on Wheels, worked at Westmount Hospital’s tuck shop, and delivered flowers at Mc Kellar Hospital.
Joan was lucky enough to spend seven years living at Chartwell Residence on Arundel where she enjoyed all kinds of activities-especially Bingo and music nights. Her top pick for any group to play was always Dark Town Strutters Ball. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Chartwell’s staff for all the care they showed Joan during those years. They’re also very grateful to Barb and Susan from Paramed who went above what anyone expected so Joan could stay comfortable there as long as possible.
We’d also like to thank everyone at Southbridge Roseview for their excellent care over the past year and a half-especially helping make Joan comfortable during her final days with us.
The family is deeply thankful too for Dr. Kelly Magee-Adams who cared so kindly for Joan through many years.
Joan leaves behind daughters Gail Jorgenson and Barb (Bruce) Murray; granddaughters Jana (Neil) Coats, Carole Murray, Jodie Maunula-Murray; plus great-grandchildren Cameron, Maddy, Celtie (Yosef), Makensie (Oscar), Lucas, Logan and Lachlan.
She was preceded in death by her first husband John Welk; second husband Jim (JT) Walker; mother Mavis Mulhall; son Jamie Walker; grandson Todd Murray; and son-in-law Barry Jorgenson.
Following Joan’s wishes cremation has already taken place. A celebration of life will happen Saturday March 28 at 11:00 a. m., held at St. Thomas Anglican Church with Reverend Jonathan Blanchard leading the service.
If you wish you can send donations instead of flowers-to St. Thomas Anglican Church Family Giving Centre or another charity you choose-these would be much appreciated.
Those who love us never really leave us.
