Joy Hartman - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

October 7, 1941 – March 18, 2026

We are heartbroken to share that Joy Annia Hartman (née Misener), aged 84, passed away peacefully at Hogarth Riverview Manor on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

Joy was born in Hamilton, Ontario on October 7, 1941 to Robert and Annie (née Schaefer) Misener. She moved to Thunder Bay as a little girl with her family – her parents, brother Roy and sister Loy. She grew up here and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force right on her 18th birthday in 1959 as a Meteorologist observer. She served until 1966 and left with the rank of Leading Aircraftwoman. After her service she worked as a Meteorologist in Winnipeg before coming back to Thunder Bay in ’77 where she stayed ever since. Knitting was one of her favorite pastimes and she always liked going out for a shopping trip.

The most important thing for Joy was family. She raised three kids all by herself as a single mom – working really hard for them – showing what true strength and determination look like. Spending time with her children and grandchildren brought her so much joy. While we’ll miss her a lot, we hold tight to all the great memories she gave us.

She leaves behind daughter Shelley Bachynski (née Hartman), son Ron Hartman; son-in-law Glen Bachynski; grandsons Jacob Thompson from Toronto; Brent (Karrilyn) and Derik Bachynski; Joseph and Jesse Smith; Nikko and Michael Hartman; plus two great-grandsons Dean and Ethan Bachynski. Her sister Loy Etelapaa is also here along with nieces Maryann, Karen and Laura plus other extended family members.

Joy was predeceased by daughter Sharla Thompson; parents Robert and Annie Misener; brother Roy Misener; and brother-in-law Leo Etelapaa.

The family wants to say a big thank you to everyone at Daisy – 3 South at Hogarth Riverview for the wonderful care they gave our mom over the years. Also thanks to Robins Donuts staff who made sure she never missed her morning coffee.

Following Joy’s wishes, cremation has been done already, and her ashes will be scattered into the Atlantic Ocean near Nova Scotia’s coast. If anyone wants to honor her memory with donations, Epilepsy Canada or Canadian Mental Health Association would be appreciated causes.

The arrangements are being handled by WESTFORT CHAPEL at 420 West Gore Street at James.
