Plans have been put forward to create England’s first dedicated cycle street in Cambridge. The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) has filed a planning application for the Comberton Greenway.

According to the GCP, this is a big move forward for the greenway in Cambridgeshire. Jonathan Camp, project manager at GCP said: “Reaching this milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the support of local landowners and farmers, and we’re grateful for their collaboration.

“The final design reflects what the community wanted. For example, the choice of surfacing materials was carefully selected to ensure areas retain their rural feel, and the design includes specific crossing points for tractors, as requested.

“We’ve started early work on some parts of the Greenway already, including Adams Road – England’s first Cycle Street. Once the greenway is complete, it will stretch from Comberton all the way into central Cambridge.”

They still need planning permission for some sections of the greenway but work has begun on important stretches. These include:

New and improved crossings plus slower speed limits in Comberton; Upgrades to street lighting, road surface improvements, redesigned junctions and traffic calming measures in Coton.

The Comberton Greenway will start off in Comberton, head north along Long Road towards Coton. Then it’ll cross over the M11 bridge and go through Cambridge University West Campus. The path continues via Adams Road, Grange Road, and Sidgwick Avenue before ending at Silver Street.
