It is with heavy hearts that the family shares news of Mary Phyllis Ivany’s gentle passing at Pioneer Ridge, right there with her husband Lloyd by her side. Phyllis was born in Salmon Cove, NL back in May 1930. She worked as a teacher before marrying Lloyd in 1957, after which she dedicated herself to her family and church activities.
Phyllis took great pride in her Newfoundland roots and loved telling stories about growing up there. She especially liked sharing those tales when she and Lloyd brought their grandsons, Derek and David, along to mark Newfoundland’s 500th anniversary in 1997. The four had a fantastic trip touring the province and joining in all the festivities.
She never forgot a birthday or anniversary, always sending cards or making calls. Throughout Lloyd’s ministry years, her support was truly remarkable. Wherever they served, she made new friends and played an active role in church life. Phyllis enjoyed hosting dinners and was well known for creating beautiful centerpieces.
Phyllis leaves behind her husband, Rev. Lloyd Ivany; their son Peter and his wife Rev. Susan Ivany; grandsons Derek (with Michèle Gervais) and David (with Paul Grandy). Also surviving are sister Marie Thomas; brother-in-law Richard Poffley; sister-in-law Isabel Rose; sister Ivy and brother-in-law Hanuel Ivany; along with many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was predeceased by her parents Mary and Alfred Rose; brothers Berkley (and his wife Wilma) and Warren; sisters Daphne (and Ed Crummey), Hilda (and Sandy Clarke), plus Berniece Poffley.
Cremation has already taken place. A memorial service is planned for summer at Westminster United Church in Thunder Bay with Rev. Steven Loweth leading it. Details will be shared closer to the date.
