Public still not allowed at in-person Cambridge council meetings

The upcoming Cambridge City Council meeting won’t happen face-to-face as planned.

On Monday, the City of Cambridge shared that the council session scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 23, will now be held online.

“This change follows an incident earlier today involving a disruptive member of the public,” reads a release from the City of Cambridge. “The City is taking proactive steps to ensure a safe and respectful environment for Council, staff, and community members.”

The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) later confirmed they were called by security at Cambridge city hall after a threatening voicemail was received.

“Security advised police they would be placing the facility in a hold and secure,” said WRPS Public Information Officer, Melissa Quarrie, in an e-mail to 570 News Radio. “The involved community member has been trespassed from City of Cambridge properties and there are no grounds for any criminal charges at this time.”

The meeting on Tuesday will still start at 6:30 p. m., with instructions provided for delegates on how to join online.

Anyone planning to attend in person is encouraged instead to watch it live on You Tube.

This would have been the first council meeting at Cambridge city hall with mandatory bag checks starting that day as part of new security measures.
