The safest cities in Canada, according to the Crime Severity Index

Statistics Canada keeps track of crime across the country using something called the Crime Severity Index (CSI).

Unlike just counting how many crimes happen, the CSI also looks at how serious those crimes are-giving a clearer picture of crime overall. The scores are adjusted to a baseline of “100” (similar to how the Consumer Price Index works), using 2006 as the starting point. More serious crimes get higher scores and affect the total number more, while minor crimes count less.

If you’re new to Canada and deciding where to settle, the CSI can be helpful. But remember, it’s only one part of the puzzle. It doesn’t tell you everything about safety on its own-you’ll want to check out other info too like regular crime rates, community safety stats, demographics, job opportunities, income levels, and housing conditions.

If there weren’t CMAs included in some provinces’ measurements under the index here is what we know instead:

What exactly does the Crime Severity Index look at?

The Crime Severity Index tracks yearly changes in how severe crime is across Canada – not just counts but seriousness too – based on sentences courts give throughout all provinces and territories.

The index breaks down into two big parts-the Violent Crime Severity Index and Non-Violent Crime Severity Index.

The Violent Crime Severity Index covers all violent offenses reported in police surveys (UCR2) like threats or harassment or forcing someone against their will; while The Non-Violent Crime Severity Index covers everything else including traffic violations or drug offences plus breaches under Federal Statutes.

Just so you know-this mostly focuses on Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs). A CMA is one or more neighboring towns around a core city area with over 100K people total-and that core itself has at least fifty thousand residents.
