Mona Thompson - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

It’s with heavy hearts that we share the news of Mona Gertrude Thompson’s peaceful passing at home, held by her daughter, on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Mona was born in Cabano, Quebec, on April 5, 1947. She spent her childhood in Timmins and later Manitouwadge alongside six siblings. That’s where she met Bill Thompson and they got married. The couple moved to Geraldton before settling in Cameron Falls, Ontario within the Ontario Hydro Colony back in 1966. When the colony closed in 1970, they bought a house right in Nipigon on six lovely acres right downtown. Then in 1980, the township took their land and gave them just a year to move out – so once again they had to start fresh. This time it was on a big piece of land – 37 acres along Cameron Falls Road. Mom was tough – it’s just how she was built. She always kept smiling through all those changes as they rebuilt their lives for the third time. But this round was trickier since Dad was still building their house when Mom surprised everyone by getting pregnant again. With two teenage girls already and one baby coming soon, she managed everything with such calm and patience.

She was a loving wife and mom who left an empty space no one else can fill. Mom loved us girls without limits; there wasn’t anything we couldn’t tell her because she wanted to know every little detail about our lives. She had a kind heart and loved being around us so much that sometimes when we’d all be together she’d just quietly watch and listen – soaking it all up because family meant everything to her. Mom put others first always-taking care of things at home so Dad could enjoy his hobbies like music, fixing stuff or hunting trips. She believed deeply in us girls and made sure we believed in ourselves too; whenever our confidence faltered she’d find ways to build it back up strong with love and encouragement.

Mom never backed down from any challenge Dad threw at her either-from raising chickens, turkeys and sheep to riding motorbikes or snowmobiles; even getting her hunting license so she could go out with us hunters! She also made clothes for us growing up since she sewed beautifully herself. Teaching us knitting skills came naturally along with gardening plus making preserves and canning food together were some of her favorite things too. Cooking was another talent-she loved preparing meals for guests whenever possible-and hummingbirds were a special joy; feeding them for over five decades.

For seven years Mom fought Vascular Dementia but never stopped recognizing us or saying our names aloud while telling us “I love you” until the very end. Even these last five years brought lots more smiles plus jokes than I remember from before-she stayed funny right up till then! Living with her daughters made her happy; spending time together kept her as our family’s heart beat steady every day she stayed with us here at home during those final times teaching lessons anew like courage beyond what we knew possible plus endless patience beyond measure… learning acceptance when things didn’t make sense plus deeper love filled with compassion & selflessness too.. Honestly caring for Mom through it all turned out being one of the most meaningful things we’ve ever done – something really special among all else.

Her whole life focused on loving family first then serving God-nothing else mattered much after that really according to what she told us many times over years past long ago finding out God actually has a name (Jehovah) when only seventeen years old-and once discovering Him never looking back since then dedicating over sixty faithful years studying scripture regularly & sharing His word everywhere she could reach people around herself by baptism done September ’64.

She leaves behind daughters Judy (Eddie) Thompson, Linda (Rik) Aikman & Jill (Troy) Thompson; grandchildren Michael Ste Croix & Jennifer Denis; great-grandchildren Selena Thompson & Nikita Denis; siblings Yvette Boys, Pauline Morin (Jack), Paul Legouffe (Patricia); plus lots of nieces & nephews.

Mona joined husband Bill Thompson before passing away as well as parents Emile & Estelle Legouffe along with brother Guy Legouffe plus sisters Stella Grimes & Reggie Daigle including nephew Jean-Guy Legouffe who died earlier.

A big thanks goes out to Rik my husband & Eddie Judy’s partner who supported everything letting us care for Mom at home-it wouldn’t have been doable without both your help truly appreciated! Also Jennifer granddaughter who played such an important role visiting Thunder Bay often helping look after Grandma constantly showing up whenever needed most while Jill would brighten every room walking through doors making Mom light up instantly like sunshine does sometimes too! Thanks also Deb & Claude Zappitelli for ongoing support alongside Liza Fiala giving extra time devoted towards caring effort extended kindly toward mom here lately… A warm shout-out goes especially Dr Varty whose kindness stretched beyond usual doctor duties texting me quickly days off/vacation helping handle whatever came needing medical attention – Your care shown means forever remembered by me/my family deeply grateful!! Also huge props Justin RN Angie Occupational Therapist Rachel Physio Leanne PSW – You formed great bonds supporting Mona daily throughout rough times enabling best quality life possible right until last breath breathed peacefully surrounded by love safe at home rather than anywhere else ever wanted!
