January 5, 1952 – December 31, 2025
With heavy hearts, Don Moir’s family shares the news of his sudden passing just days before he turned 74. Born in 1952, Don was the oldest son of Fred Sr. and Mary Moir. He went to Balsam Public School and Hillcrest High School. Early on, he worked at Dominion Stores before heading to Sault Ste. Marie College to study art. Eventually, he found his way back to groceries working for A& P and Safeway before finishing up at FRP Manufacturing. Don taught himself guitar as a kid which led him to join local bands like the Jolly Ramblers and Reflections that performed around Thunder Bay. He also sang with the Fort William Male Choir for a time. He was predeceased by his dad Fred Sr., older sister Irene, younger brother Fred Jr., plus brother-in-law and close friend Terry. Don is survived by his mom Mary; brothers Gord (Gislaine), David (Jackie), Douglas; and sister Anita. Many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces will miss his “dad” jokes and playful spirit. Don especially loved hanging out with niece Samantha and her family – always up for good food, fun company, and games together. It wasn’t unusual for him to play army games with the boys or dolls with his great niece Kaitlyn-they had a special connection and he often said how much richer life would’ve been if he’d had a daughter like her. He spoke often about how talented Samantha’s kids (Kristin, Colton, Kaitlyn, Cameron) were and what a great mom Samantha was to them all. Don valued his friendship with Tim too; they met over thirty years ago. Losing family members hit him hard but recently he found some peace reconnecting with cousin Leo-they spent lots of time studying the Bible together which led to his baptism earlier this year as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
A service for Don will be held on Saturday, January 24th, 2026 at 1:00 p. m., at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 1034 Oliver Road with David Alander leading it. Anyone who can’t attend in person can watch online via Zoom ID 85443667724 using password: Unified. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
Later this summer when travel is easier for out-of-town family and friends there will be an informal Celebration of Life for Don – details will come closer to that date. If you’d like to honor Don without sending flowers donations are welcome either to the Centre for Complex Diabetes Care (Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre), Diabetes Health (St. Joseph’s Care Group), or another charity you prefer.
