The Northern Clipper
We’re saddened to share that Brandon Nicolas Esquega passed away suddenly on January 8, 2026. He was born on December 15, 2000 to Gloria Esquega and Leo Tookenay.
In the boxing world, his friends called him the “Northern Clipper.” He earned a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Games in Brampton, Ontario.
Brandon took pride in what he achieved and admired Peter Panetta-a mentor who pushed him to get his Boxing certification. After that, he became someone kids looked up to at the Underground Gym where he first started training.
He began working out early and once told Theresa (his adoptive parent) about a job interview he had-and he got the job! From then on, he always had work. He really enjoyed working with his big brother Jordan at RML Contracting.
Later, Brandon joined the firefighting team in Geraldton. He liked it a lot and looked forward to going back each year.
He leaves behind his mom Gloria, dad Leo, brothers Jordan, Talon, Milton, Dante, Ethan and Alexander; grandparents Myria (Laverne), Fred and Rita; his adoptive parent Theresa; special aunt Lucy (Lionel); plus many nieces and nephews too many to list here.
He was preceded in death by his brother Tristan, sister Christine, uncle Gene; great-grandparents Margaret and Victor Sr.; grandfather Marcel; along with his special partner Tala and their baby.
The funeral service will be held Friday, January 16, 2026 at St. Anne’s Church starting at 11:30 AM with Father Biju Mathew officiating. Burial will happen later at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
The Westfort Chapel located at 420 West Gore Street at James in Thunder Bay is handling arrangements.
