Vincent Nicol - Obituary - Northwest Ontario

Vincent Eugene “Grip” Nicol, aged 80 and from Nipigon, passed away quietly at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with his children nearby on January 6, 2026. Vince was born May 25, 1945 in Port Arthur, Thunder Bay. Coming from a railroad family, he went to several elementary schools including Jackfish Public, Coldwell Public, Hurkett Public, Dorion Public before moving on to Nip-Rock District High School. Vince spent nearly 40 years working at the Mac Millan Bloedel Plywood Mill as a Pettibone Operator-a job he really enjoyed. He held the second highest seniority there after his younger brother until the mill burned down in 2007. Vince loved bowling at Sportsman Lanes where he often scored high and liked to brag about it a bit. When his kids were growing up, he never missed their sports games and cheered loudly for them; later on, he kept that same enthusiasm watching all of his grandchildren’s hockey games around town. As he got older, one thing that brought him joy was his daily coffee routine-starting at Nipigon Café then hitting Tim Horton’s and Robin’s Doughnuts to grab a cup and watch people go by from his car or hang out at the Nipigon Marina. Besides sharing coffee with his brothers, he made lots of friends over those cups of joe and built some great friendships. Vince is survived by his children Lynn (Todd), Doug and Sherry (Ian), grandchildren Cole, Evan and Josh, great-grandchildren Avia and Spencer; siblings Levina Collins, Irwin (Linda) and Marden “Shorty” (Marcie); plus many nieces and nephews along with the extended Ray family. He was predeceased by granddaughter Jordan; parents Eugene and Dorothy; brother-in-law Myrl Collins; as well as numerous members of the extended Ray family. Cremation has been done already. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday January 30th, 2026 at the Nipigon Legion from 1 to 3 pm where friends and family can come together to remember “Grip” and share stories from back in the day. Refreshments will be served. Instead of flowers, donations can be sent to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. You can leave online condolences through www. nwfainc. com
