William Donald “Don” Murray, 77 years old, passed away suddenly at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on January 5, 2026.
He was born on March 8, 1948, in Fort William, Ontario, the son of Bill and Nancy (née Glover) Murray.
Don is survived by his kids, David Murray and Jody (Phil) Ukrainec; grandchildren Cameron, Aaron, Jase, and Jesse; his fiancée Mary Kostynick along with her son Chris Kostynick; his brother Gerry (Aury) Murray; sister-in-law Colleen (Bob) Hodgson; plus nieces and nephews and their families.
He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Lesley Murray (née Douglas), who died September 22, 2020; his parents Bill and Nancy Murray; brother Jim Murray; in-laws Jack and Violet Douglas; sister-in-law Jackie Douglas; and nephew Kasmir Douglas Drewno.
Music played a big part in Don’s life. He was proud to be with the Pipes and Drums of Thunder Bay for over six decades. He also played with bands like The Fugitives and Diamonds in the Rough. After working many years at the Ministry of the Environment, he retired but then came back to work again before retiring a second time as Superintendent of Environmental Affairs at Bowater. Don was also a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church.
He loved traveling and new experiences. Don and Lesley went all over-both internationally and around with their fifth-wheel trailer-making lots of great memories. More recently he shared trips with Mary too: visits to Portugal and Italy plus several cruises-and they had plenty more plans for future adventures.
Cremation has already taken place. There will be a Celebration of Life at Neebing Roadhouse on March 8th from noon until 3 p. m.
