Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett says the community “grieves today” after a three-year-old girl died and a 31-year-old woman was hurt while walking near a plaza in the city Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to the plaza on Cedar Street around 12:50 p. m. ET following reports that pedestrians had been struck.

Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital with severe, life-threatening injuries. The three-year-old girl passed away; the 31-year-old woman from Cambridge was seriously injured but her injuries are not life-threatening.

The driver, a 75-year-old man from Cambridge, was unharmed.

Just three weeks earlier, on Nov. 20, a 34-year-old woman died after being hit while crossing at Langs Drive and Industrial Road in Cambridge.

Friends and family have identified the young victim as Sthephanie Palao Eduardo de Amat y Leon through Facebook posts, an online fundraiser set up for her family, and her obituary. She was married and had two kids.

A 75-year-old woman from Cambridge has been charged with careless driving causing death related to that incident.

‘The pain of families is unfathomable’

Mayor Liggett shared that these losses affect everyone in the community deeply.

“The pain of families is unfathomable, particularly in a holiday season where family gatherings are a major part of the season, loss of ones loved ones is even more marked,” Liggett said.

“On behalf of the city, I extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected,” she added.

“Our community is a loving one and grieves today at these needless losses of a small child yesterday and a young mother three weeks ago. We additionally think about the first responders, passersby and others witnessing these horrific events, keeping them in our hearts as well.”

The police continue their investigation into Thursday’s fatal crash and ask anyone who saw it or might have dashcam or store security footage to get in touch with investigators or Crime Stoppers.

Police urge caution for pedestrians and drivers

The police also remind both pedestrians and drivers to stay careful – especially near crosswalks and school zones.

Drivers should slow down in neighborhoods and always watch out for people walking nearby.

“Avoid distractions and ensure your full attention is on the roadway,” Waterloo regional police said via email to Cambridge Chronicle on Friday.

Pedestrians are encouraged to use marked crosswalks when they can, wait until cars stop completely, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping off curbs.>
