At the moment, there are no confirmed victims or ongoing safety threats, a Cambridge police spokesperson said.
Cambridge police shared these images of someone they want to talk to about Friday’s shooting. They made clear this person isn’t considered a suspect right now, but detectives hope to get in touch with them. Cambridge Police Department
Harvard University had a short shelter-in-place order Friday morning while cops looked for a suspect riding a bike who reportedly fired shots at someone in Cambridge.
“Cambridge Police are currently on-scene of a shots fired incident that took place on Sherman Street in the vicinity of Danehy Park,” a Cambridge police spokesperson initially told Boston. com via email. “Ballistic evidence has been recovered.”
The spokesperson confirmed that no injuries or public safety risks are known at this point.
Later Friday afternoon, police updated Boston. com by email saying that 911 calls came in just before 11 a. m., reporting several gunshots on Sherman Street.
Early findings suggest two or three people were involved in an argument on the street, and at least one may have been biking during the dispute, according to authorities. One person allegedly shot multiple times at another individual.
The police added that everyone left the scene before officers arrived and they’re not believed to still be nearby.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Harvard University issued a shelter-in-place and notifications were made to nearby schools and places of interest,” the spokesperson said. “Available evidence suggests that this was an isolated incident with those directly involved, there is no on-going public safety risk to the broader community. Sherman St. and several surrounding roadways were closed while CPD Detectives processed the scene. All roadways have since re-opened.”
Cambridge police also put out photos of someone they’d like to talk with about what happened. They clarified this individual isn’t wanted for arrest right now.
If anyone has information, they’re asked to contact Cambridge detectives at 617-349-3121. Tips can also be sent anonymously online.
Before noon, Harvard sent out several emergency alerts warning people that university and city police were searching near Radcliffe Quad for the suspect.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted by noon.
“Please continue to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the HUPD at 617-495-1212,” one Harvard alert said.
